Yellowjackets Review ~ A Captivating and Unsettling Tale of Survival

The basic premise of Yellowjackets is that a high school girls soccer team is in a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness. The survivors “starved, scavenged, and prayed” until they were found nineteen months later. Yellowjackets follows the survivors of the plane crash that occurred in the 90’s and also their reunion 25 years later. But there is so much more to it than just that.

Original themes and storylines

A lot of unsettling, traumatic things can happen in nineteen months. Yellowjackets is dark and disturbing for sure. It reminded me a little bit of Lost at times although it is darker in tone. It is also reminded me of the 1993 movie, Alive, about a rugby team who’s plane crashed in the snow. If you saw that movie then you know it was pretty disturbing. But even though I thought I knew where Yellowjackets was going, it still surprised me. And while it is reminiscent of other shows it is not a copycat by any means. There are definitely enough original themes and storylines to keep it interesting.

Stand out performances

There are some recognizable faces and stand out performances as well. Melanie Lynskey (Shauna), Tawny Cypress (Taissa), Christina Ricci (Misty), and Juliette Lewis (Natalie) all play the girls as adults. They are attempting to live their lives 25 years later but still haven’t been able to put the crash behind them. These ladies have some chilling scenes and their teenage counterparts are equally compelling.

Worth your time!

Yellowjackets is as captivating as it is unsettling. There was an episode in Season 2 where I thought “maybe I should just quit watching this” because I was so disturbed. But I’m glad I pushed through because the show overall is truly worth watching. The series is currently in Season 2 and is definitely worth your time! Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
