Shrinking Review ~ The Perfect Combination of Funny and Moving

I was going to wait until the season was over but I’m just enjoying this show so much I wanted to go ahead and share it. The only thing I don’t like about Shrinking is that each episode is only thirty minutes. It always leaves me wanting more. It stars Jason Segel as Jimmy, a grieving therapist who begins to tell his clients the brutal truth, unfiltered, with some interesting results. It seems like Jimmy is kind of losing it, and while that is probably a normal reaction to losing your wife, those close to him are worried.

So many great characters

Jimmy is surrounded by family, friends, clients and colleagues. They are all essential in helping him navigate his life after the loss of his wife. There are so many notable characters and actors on the show. Lukita Maxwell plays Alice, Jimmy’s spunky teenage daughter. She’s dealing with the loss of her mother while her father is spiraling. Maxwell captures Alice’s maturity, teenage angst, and vulnerability perfectly. And who doesn’t love Jimmy’s client, Sean (Luke Tennie). He’s a military vet with PTSD and a heart of gold. He’s teaching Jimmy some important lessons and making an impression on other people in Jimmy’s life as well. Harrison Ford plays Paul, Jimmy’s mentor who is not pleased with Jimmy’s new approach to therapy. Harrison Ford! He’s snarky and it’s fun to watch. And Jessica Williams plays Gaby, Jimmy’s colleague and his wife’s best friend. She has some of the best lines on the show. I could keep going.

More than just a comedy

Shrinking is a comedy. And it is funny. But it’s much more than that. It is real and will tug at your heartstrings. It’s emotional but not depressing. It’s the perfect combination of funny and moving. It deals with sensitive issues, one after another, but it doesn’t feel overwhelming for the viewer. It feels touching. It has already been renewed for Season 2 so more is coming!! Don’t miss this one!
