Handmaid’s Tale ~ New Season!! Season 5 Review

**Warning** Do not read this if you have not watched previous seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale. It is a spoiler free review of SEASON 5 but does contain information from prior seasons.

When we last saw June she had finally made it home to Canada (without Hannah). She also, along with her friends, had brutally killed Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes). And in Season 5, for some reason, certain people are bothered by that, including his pregnant wife, Serena. Personally, I did not miss him for one second.

No sympathy for Serena

I won’t give away any spoilers but one of the irritating things about this season is how the writers kept trying to make me sympathize with Serena. But don’t worry. I frequently reminded myself of all the terrible things she did to June in the name of Gilead. I should probably credit Yvonne Strahovski (Serena) with being such a talented actress. I keep forgetting to hate her.

Will June return to Gilead?

Sadly for June and her devoted husband, the violence hasn’t ended just because she’s back home. Also, with Hannah still there and new developments in Gilead there is a constant pull for them to go back. And Joseph Lawrence provides an opportunity for that this season. Of all the complicated characters on this show, I think Joseph Lawrence (played by Bradley Whitford) is the most confusing. He always seems to be switching sides.

The Handmaid’s Tale is still worth watching

The Handmaid’s Tale is still the most intriguing show I have ever watched. It has definite correlations with today’s world which we could discuss for days. But I watch TV for fun and escape. This season is no different. There are still moments in this show that surprise you.

Good Stuff: Impeccable acting, Serena’s storyline

Bad Stuff: Lawrence’s character, Serena’s sympathy play

Where to watch: Hulu
