Firefly Lane Review ~ Unique Storytelling and a Beautiful Friendship

I’m a little late on this one. I’ll admit when Firefly Lane first came out in 2021 I watched the first episode and thought it was ok, got distracted and never finished it. But when season 2 came out recently a lot of my friends were talking about it. I have serious FOMO when it comes to TV so I decided to give it another shot. And I am so glad I did! I enjoyed this show so much.

Unique storytelling

Firefly Lane is about an unlikely friendship between Tully Hart (Katherine Heigl) and Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke). The show follows the ups and downs of their life and friendship for 30 years. One of the most original and interesting parts of this show is that each episode shows three separate times in Kate and Tully’s lives: the 70’s , the 80’s and the 2000’s. There are many shows that tell stories through flashbacks but this one is different. I really love this form of unique storytelling. It allows for various phases of the characters’ personalities, changes in their clothing, hairstyles, relationships, and the music of the times. There are even two other talented actresses who play Kate and Tully in the 1970’s (Roan Curtis and Ali Skovbye).

An unbreakable friendship

The heart of the show is this seemingly unbreakable friendship between Tully and Kate. They go through individual heartbreaks and triumphs as well as real challenges within their friendship over the years. Not everyone gets to experience a friendship like this one. In the 70’s Kate is a nerdy, introverted teen who lives on Firefly Lane when Tully moves there with her drug addicted hippie mother. Tully is beautiful and popular but obviously has trouble at home and needs a friend. She finds a great one in Kate. In the 80’s Kate and Tully work together at a TV station while Tully pursues her dream of being a TV reporter. In the 2000’s Kate is married to Johnny and Tully is a famous TV talk show host.

Beautifully written relationships

All of the relationships on this show are written so beautifully. Not just Kate and Tully. They are so real. Kate and her husband, Johnny have a long, loving and supportive relationship as well. It changes quite a bit over the series but it’s satisfying to watch. The relationship between Tully and her mother is not quite as nice. But it evolves and it shapes Tully into who she is. The relationships in Firefly Lane are just so deep and so well written.

Final episodes next summer!

There are so many things to like about Firefly Lane. The drama, the multiple timelines, the beautiful relationships, the eighties hair! For all you readers out there, it is based on a novel of the same name by Kristin Hannah (available below). Unfortunately, there will be no season 3 but there will be a season 2, part 2 including seven more episodes coming June 8, 2023!

Good Stuff: Unique storytelling, well written relationships

Bad Stuff: Bad 80’s wigs, no season 3
