Only Murders in the Building Review

When a fellow resident is murdered in their New York City apartment building, three strangers are drawn together through their love of true crime. This most unlikely threesome played by Steve Martin (Charles), Martin Short (Oliver) and Selena Gomez (Mabel) decide to “investigate” the death and simultaneously create a podcast.

A solid cast and colorful characters

There is so much to love about this show. The cast is fantastic. Steve Martin and Martin Short have obviously worked together before (Father of the Bride, Three Amigos!) and they are solid and funny. I was hesitant about Selena at first but she definitely can hold her own with those seasoned actors. Steve Martin is the comedically “straight” guy which is unusual. It’s not that he isn’t good, he just isn’t exactly funny. But Martin Short makes up for it and so do all the other residents in their building with all their snark and sarcasm.

Despite all the comedic actors, Only Murders in the Building is a murder mystery and not just a comedy. The plot twists will keep you guessing. There are surprises and shenanigans without it being slapstick. There are also some entertaining cameos by Sting, Amy Schumer, and Tina Fey. It’s a really quick watch. It’s only 2 seasons so far with season 3 coming out some time in 2023 so check this one out!

Good stuff: Never a dull moment, excellent cast

Bad stuff: Steve Martin’s non-funny role, too few episodes
